Group Therapy for Men & Women in San Diego

Group therapy is an important part of any mental health treatment program. Many people have suffered alone, with no one they felt they could trust to share their story with. That feeling of isolation can be incredibly painful. At Wings Recovery, we provide compassionate group therapy guided by skilled therapists to ensure you always feel safe and comfortable.

Our gender-specific group sessions are the perfect opportunity to practice skills learned in individual sessions, as well as in group classes where you learn to give and receive support in ways that honor your needs and individuality while respecting those of others. These skills will improve your interpersonal relationships and the way you interact with others in your day-to-day life.

Your First Therapy Group

Group therapy—it’s not like what you see on TV, or like any other groups or conversations you might have been part of before. Many people feel nervous when attending a therapy group for the first time. This is natural—the level of vulnerability that group members show is matched only by the compassionate support of their peers at our two programs.

But after their first group or two, many find that this is one of their favorite parts of the treatment experience. For individuals entering treatment for the first time, it is a huge relief to be able to sit and share with a group of other like-minded men or women who understand you and who can listen and validate your experience and may be able to see things through your lens.

The group therapy programs at Wings Recovery are designed to broaden your therapeutic support system by bringing together a network of individuals experiencing similar struggles. This close-knit group then becomes a safety net and alliance that reminds you that you are not alone.

Types of Group Therapy

At Wings Recovery, we offer many types of group therapy, each one designed for different objectives and outcomes.

Process Groups

Process groups involve open-ended conversations where members share their feelings, including their hopes, fears, frustrations, and triumphs, while being encouraged to practice active listening and empathy for others. Receiving feedback from peers is an amazing way to learn about yourself and how you function in relationships. A therapist guides the flow of the group, but there is no set topic or curriculum in a process group.

CBT & DBT Groups

These groups offer in-depth insights into trauma and how to overcome its effects. We work hard to make Cognitive Behavior Health (CBT) and Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) groups a safe space where individuals feel comfortable opening up and sharing their stories.

Trauma Support Groups

Cognitive Behavior Health and Dialectical Behavior Therapy are evidence-based therapies that teach you new ways of relating to your thoughts, emotions, and actions. These therapies are proven to help you better manage difficult emotions and other mental health symptoms.

Codependency Groups

Many of us learn unhealthy relationship patterns in our families of origin. In codependency group therapy, you learn to create boundaries and set yourself up for the healthy relationships you deserve.

Relapse Prevention Groups

Did you know that many mental health diagnoses, such as depression, are vulnerable to a relapse of symptoms? In these groups, you learn the coping skills and support structures necessary to keep your recovery on the right track.

Holistic Therapy Groups

Balancing mind, body, and spirit is essential to a healthy recovery from mental health issues. That’s why we offer a wide range of holistic group therapies, including Nutrition Support and Meditation and Mindfulness groups, all facilitated by experts in their fields.

Art-Focused Groups

Oftentimes, healing and art go hand in hand. Our Art, Improv, and Music Therapy groups blend the power of creativity with your healing journey for lasting recovery.

& More

At Wings Recovery, we offer groups to cover all healing needs. These include Seeking Safety, Moral Reconation (men’s program only), Acceptance Commitment Therapy (ACT), and more.

Group Therapy Schedule

In our residential and PHP programs, you will have regular group therapy every day, Monday through Friday, as well as participate in holistic therapy groups and other fun group activities on the weekends. In our IOP program, you attend treatment three hours a day, three to five days per week.
